Edition 5/25, with 4 artist's proofs
Collector's Edition — comprising the framed silver gelatin print and a hand-signed copy of the artist's retrospective monograph Hiroshi Sugimoto (Hatje Cantz, 2005), bound in pale blue-grey silk cloth with debossed title, housed together in a custom brushed aluminium presentation box.
From the series Conceptual Forms (2004–2005), in which Sugimoto photographed 19th-century scientific teaching machines from the University of Tokyo collection. Conceived as a dialogue with Marcel Duchamp's The Large Glass, the series transforms industrial apparatus into monumental abstract sculpture through Sugimoto's signature large-format black-and-white photography.
The accompanying monograph — awarded the Best-Designed German Book Prize (2005) and the German Photo Book Award (2006) — is the definitive retrospective of Sugimoto's work to date, spanning all major series: Dioramas, Theaters, Seascapes, Chambers of Horrors, Sea of Buddha, Architecture, Portraits, Pine Trees and Conceptual Forms, with texts by Kerry Brougher, Pia Müller-Tamm and the artist.
Published in conjunction with exhibitions at the Mori Art Museum, Tokyo and the Hirshhorn Museum, Washington D.C.
