Atsuko Tanaka
Atsuko Tanaka was a Japanese artist who was one of only several female members of the Gutai movement, joining in 1955. Reshaping the group's interests in chance, time, and space into her own vocabulary, her art is recognized for her preoccupation of the body as a malleable artwork and her paintings embodying cyclicity and energy. One of her most well known works is the Electric Dress (1956), in which she created a garment from incandescent light bulbs that she wore and moved around in. Her paintings evolve from her interest in connectivity and motion, interweaving bright colors, circles, and organic forms, evoking a synergetic spirit. They inherit the tradition of geometric abstraction while retaining the organic elements of abstract expressionism, reminding us of the intricate interconnectedness of life.
